We have four parathyroid glands on back of thyroid gland which will maintain calcium levels in blood. Some disorders of these glands are associated with altered calcium levels in blood leading to symptoms involving multiple organs. Most common parathyroid conditions seen are
Parathyroid adenoma
Parathyroid gland hyperplasia
PARATHYROID ADENOMA
Here one of four glands enlarge in size which produce more parathyroid hormone (PTH) than required, there by elevating blood calcium levels. Excess PTH hormones removes calcium from bones, and this leads to osteoporosis. Excess calcium in blood accumulates in other organs causing kidney stones, muscle weakness etc.
Surgery is done to remove this adenoma to correct calcium levels in blood.
1)Ultrasound neck
2)Sestamibi scan
3)4D CT scan parathyroid
First exact site of adenoma is identified using above tests and surgery is done with small incision or using Robot

Most patients need a average stay of 4 days for minor surgery to 7 days in major surgeries. ICU stay is required for major surgery. Patients will have feeding tube for maintaining nutrition during hospital stay. Radiotherapy is done as outpatient procedure
