Oral Cancer Overview
Oral cancer, also called mouth cancer, typically develops in the oral cavity, which includes the tongue, lips, gums, cheeks, palate, tonsils, and floor of the mouth. It arises when abnormal cells in the mouth grow uncontrollably, potentially spreading to surrounding tissues and lymph nodes if left untreated. Early detection is crucial to improving treatment outcomes and survival rates.
Types of Oral Cancer
There are several types of oral cancers, each varying in behavior and treatment approach:
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma: The most common form, originating from the thin, flat cells lining the mouth.
- Minor Salivary Gland Cancer: Arises in the small salivary glands found throughout the oral cavity.
- Sarcomas: Cancer affecting connective tissues such as muscles or bones in the mouth.
- Mucosal Melanoma: A rare but aggressive form originating from pigment-producing cells.
Symptoms
Early signs may be subtle but require attention: non-healing ulcers lasting over three weeks, lumps on the tongue or palate, difficulty swallowing or chewing, unexplained lumps in the neck, numbness, ear pain, persistent sore throat, red or white patches, loose teeth or dentures, weight loss, and changes in speech.
Causes and Risk Factors
Major causes include tobacco use (smoking or chewing), excessive alcohol consumption, sun exposure, poor oral hygiene, pre-existing mouth conditions, immunodeficiency, age, and certain genetic syndromes. High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and a weakened immune system also increase susceptibility.
Prevention
Preventive measures significantly reduce risk: avoid tobacco products, limit alcohol intake, protect lips and face from UV exposure, maintain proper oral hygiene, attend regular dental check-ups, and consider vaccination against HPV.
Importance of Awareness
Recognizing the early signs, understanding risk factors, and accessing timely medical care can dramatically improve prognosis. Oral cancer requires a combination of vigilance, lifestyle adjustments, and professional consultation for effective management.
